Day Three Of New York Fashion Week A/W 12 : Prabal Gurung
I love runway stills. But I think I love backstage stills more. They have more personality, more depth therefore more interest. And I’ve come across a site From Me To You, which satisfies my backstage curiosity, where the photographer captures the most beautiful photos of the highest quality. I came across her first of all on Instagram, and then found her blog on Tumblr here. She’s coverering New York Fashion Week, front and back stage and here are just a few of her photos backstage. If you visit her site, you can see many more beautiful images from yesterday at New York Fashion Week.
These images show the make-up artists at play, with the first image of this sequence of a sketch showing Charlotte Tilbury’s planned look using MAC cosmetics. With Prabal Gurung’s entire Ready-To-Wear collection titled Uncursed, representing the journey from hell to heaven, the make up was inspired by beautiful, wild creatures using vibrant peacock shades of delft blue and emerald green.

The colours of this collection begin with black, representing hell and transition through eclectic shades of peacock blue, shimmering mustard yellow, bronze and gold, then finishing up with bright white, representing the purest heaven. I love the story of this collection. It’s not been created for the sake of it. It’s a work of art.
Feathers, lace, embroidery and satin used throughout the outfits prove that tactile textures will be staying another season. Sheer panels, metallics, utilitarian features alongside feminine ruffles show that not just one theme is necessary. It’s almost as if anything goes. And without wanting to be highly controversial or comparative with other designers, I can’t help feel that this collection has similarities with Karl Lagerfeld’s work for Chanel. What prevents it from being the same is the beautiful array of colour used, which isn’t something Uncle Karl is partial to. That’s not a criticism. I would never criticise Chanel. And anyway, I feel that would be the ultimate style sin. I’m simply separating the comparison I began to make….
The icing on the cake for the presentation of this collection is the stunning reflective nature of the blue hues used on the model’s eyes. It cleverly and effectively highlights the beauty of the exquisite craftsmanship and vision of Prabal Gurung and I am totally, wholeheartedly enchanted.
